# Closing an account

Closing your account is done in the app, by you, and takes effect at once. It is not the same as cancelling a plan or closing an organization.

## The short answer

Open Your account and choose **Close my account**. The app shows what closes with you, which organizations you leave, and anything that stops the close, then asks you to type your email address to confirm. Your name and address are replaced at once, sign-in stops working and your API keys are revoked. Clusters and counties you created stay with their organizations. The account cannot be signed in to again.

## Three different things

- **Cancelling a plan** stops a subscription renewing. The organization keeps its access to the end of the paid period, then drops to Free. See [cancelling and refunds](/docs/billing/cancelling-and-refunds).
- **Closing an organization** is the owner’s action. Its subscription is cancelled at once with no refund, nobody can reach it, and its data is kept so the former owner can reopen it. See [organizations and members](/docs/account/organizations-and-members).
- **Closing your account** ends you as a person on the service. It is described below.

## What stops a close

If you are the only owner of an organization that has other members, the close is refused: hand the organization to someone first (Members → Manage → Transfer ownership), or let a domain-verified admin’s ownership claim complete.

## What happens when you close

- Your email address and name are removed from the account, and you are opted out of product news.
- Your sign-in, sessions, two-factor settings, your own notifications and your device records are deleted. Saved workspaces are deleted on the next scheduled run, within the hour.
- Your API keys are revoked, a trial in progress ends, and you leave every organization you belonged to. Admins of those organizations are told.
- An organization in which you were the only member closes too, and its subscription is cancelled with no refund.

## What is kept, and why

The service keeps an append-only audit trail of actions taken in each organization; entries that name you stay for the period the [Privacy Policy](/legal/privacy) states, and then are removed. Usage records are kept for the stated period and then reduced to monthly totals. Billing records an organization still needs stay with that organization. Backups age out on their own schedule. A one-way hash of your former address is kept for a time so that a trial already used is not offered again.

## Related

Asking for a copy of your data, or for it to be erased, is on [privacy requests](/docs/account/privacy-requests). The periods for which each kind of record is kept are in the [Privacy Policy](/legal/privacy).
